About

Why balcony permaculture.

I started this website to share knowledge and skills I have developed on my journey to practice permaculture gardening and live a more sustainable life in an apartment. I focus on practical application of permaculture on a balcony.

My Permaculture journey began in 2018 after completing my Permaculture Design Course (PDC) in 2018 with Danielle Wheeler from Humble Designs Permaculture at the Australiana Pioneer Village.

I originally had a 450 square metre block that I applied permaculture principles to (see design and planning tab).  Sadly, I had to move to and found myself in an apartment in the centre of the Parramatta CBD, Sydney's 2nd CBD.

I set about to apply all I learnt in my PDC to my new home, with only a very small living space and balcony as my canvas. I tried searching the internet and the limited books available on balcony or small spare gardening to no avail. All that I read just didn't seem to apply to my situation or provide me with I needed.

As a result, I thought hard and reflected on I had learnt about permaculture and how I would apply it to my current situation. That is where this website came from, a drive to share all I have learnt on my journey to apply permaculture principles on my balcony.

My balcony has become an award winning garden. in 2020, I won the Parramatta City Council Spring garden competition in the balcony garden category.

I am also a member of Permaculture Sydney West.

I hope you find this website useful and share your knowledge so we learnt together.

My Bio

Behind Balcony Permaculture

Hi I'm David and I live in an apartment with my partner and two dogs. I grew up in the western suburbs of Sydney in poor neighbourhoods. I was the first in my family to attend university where I gradated in social sciences with academic awards from Charles Sturt University and then a post grad certificate from the University of New England.

I work in the human rights NGO sector in my day job and in my spare time I garden on my balcony, try to live more sustainably, drink liqueur I make at home and play nerdy board games with friends.

I've always had a love of nature and gardening since I was a teenager and have childhood members of my grandfather and father growing food in the backyard. I love being surrounded by plants, promoting sustainable living and advocating for social justice. I hope enjoy the website and I look forward to hearing from you.
